Grants for Youth Promoting Dropout Prevention Among Latinos

Youth Venture has partnered with the MTV Tr3s Voces campaign, and received support from the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation, to create an initiative that seeks to advance Latino educational achievement. Tu Voz My Venture will support the identification and creation of at least 50 teams of young people ages 13-20 who create Ventures that help Latino students graduate from high school and prepare for college or work. The top five teams will also be awarded a $5,000 team scholarship, and one of those winning teams will be featured in a news segment on MTV Tr3s! The deadline for submitting a Tu Voz application is June 29, 2007.

Professional Educator Standards Board

The mission of the Washington Professional Educator Standards Board (PESB) is to uphold high standards for educator preparation and certification, recognizing that highly qualified educators are essential to achieving high standards for all students. Since 2000, our purpose has been to serve as an advisory board to the governor, state legislature, state board of education and superintendent of public instruction on policy issues related to educator preparation, certification, and ongoing professional growth. Beginning January 1, 2006, the PESB will transition from advisory to full rulemaking authority over these policy areas.

State Board of Education

Governor Gregoire and the Legislature brought a significant change to Washington’s K-12 system by reconstituting the State Board of Education. Previously the board’s focus was administrative including boundary adjustments, school construction, and accreditation. The new board’s mandate has been expanded to provide broad leadership in education.

Washington Learns

Washington Learns is an 18-month comprehensive education study that will examine our state’s existing education system-from early learning through K-12 to higher education-and recommend ways to improve it now and in the future.

Washington State PTA

The Washington Congress of Parents and Teachers (the Washington State PTA), a branch of the National Congress of Parents and Teachers (the National PTA), was founded in 1905. The Washington State PTA is a nonprofit, membership association which seeks to bring together the home, school and community on behalf of all children and youth.
